“He education of even a small child, therefore, does not aim at preparing him for school but for life .”

– Maria Montessori

Between the ages of 18 months and 2.7 years, children crave the ability to do things on their own. Within the Montessori toddler classroom, a focus of the curriculum is helping children gain confidence in a vast number of daily activities.

Under the guidance of nurturing adults, a child in this environment learns how to gain independence by doing.Children entering this program participate in activities that promote independence, concentration, and sense of accomplishment.

For this reason, children must walk independently, feed themselves solid foods, and have given up their morning nap. This might be why your child snaps at you when you try to help them do something, when they know they can do it on their own. This helps them gain a sense of competence.

Self-care is fostered by providing child-sized furniture, as well as accessible toileting items. The children will find themselves able to use the toilet and wash their hands without the assistance of an adult. They are also guided to wash their hands and blow their nose whenever necessary.

Toddlers’ children also exercise independence by preparing for naps then rising to help the teachers to clean up their nap mats and setting up the table for afternoon snacks .
